What Should Go Here? Building at Church and Commerce

Do you have ideas about what this space could be used for?

The traffic is usually pretty heavy at the intersection of Church Street and Commerce Drive in Decatur, so you may have overlooked this two-story gray building.

It stands between CrossFit Decatur and the Hope Clinic of Emory University, which is right on the corner. Burnt Fork BBQ is across the street.

What kind of business or nonprofit would you like to see going into this space? Give your answer in the comments box below.

About this column: Every week or so, we'll post a picture of a vacant store or lot in Decatur and Avondale Estates. You can tell us what you think should replace the empty space. Know of an empty building we should highlight? E-mail ralph.ellis@patch.com.

Re zone for apartments. I'd love some affordable-in-Decatur living.

I like that idea, Kristen. Any other ideas?

A cafe and art/crafts gallery; displaying visual arts/crafts of local artist. Proceeds to pay for the operations of the center. I have a great name for it and plan. "Grace" The Sacred Journey.

A conglomeration of health & wellness practitioners. How great would it be to have your chiropractor, acupuncturist and massage therapist right next to where you work out?

i like that ideal.

Although I have never been in the building, I do know that the facade hides a house. I think the majority of the building is a house that was renovated and used as Maud Baker, until they moved across the street and subsequently, it seems ,went out of business. What it should be is difficult to project, since it has been vacant for quite a while and was before Maud Baker went in. I would posit that the design and parking will dictate the use, and it probably will not be multi-tenant!

Maud Baker is still in business at 385 N. Clarendon Ave Decatur, GA 30079.

Wow, thanks for the history lesson, Mike! Do you know when the renovation took place? Hmmm, my vote would be to turn it back into the original house and make it an eatery, like a Bleu Houe or Flying Biscuit type place.
