Good news for a section of Decatur that's had its ups and downs in recent years.
The owners of the Brick Store Pub plan to open a restaurant/bar named the Kimball House in the old Decatur Depot on East Howard Street, near the Dairy Queen.
The development has been talked about privately for months but Decatur Metro first reported it this morning with a statement from Dave Blanchard, one of the owners of the Brick Store and Leon's Full Service. The statement said, in part,
Much has been done to improve the Atlanta drink scene in the last ten years, especially with beer and cocktails. We hope to contribute to this storyline and offer something new and old along the way. We hope to add to the culinary landscape and cook with the seasons while taking full advantage of our local southern bounty.
The Kimball House will open in the spring of 2013.
The depot has been home to a couple of restaurants that didn't make it and has been empty and unused for about a year. The rest of the immediate neighborhood is dotted with empty buildings.
Feast restaurant across the street from the depot closed in February, but a Mexican restaurant called Mar will open in that space soon.
The Kimball House name comes from an old hotel in Atlanta that was torn down in the 1960s.
