Decatur City Commission Moves on Vacant Coventry Road Home

For roughly a year, following the death of its owner, the house at 615 Coventry Road has sat vacant and become somewhat of an eyesore.

Neighbors have done what they could, mowing the lawn and maintaining some semblance of curb appeal.

But they want a more permanent solution.

On Monday, the Decatur City Commission voted unanimously to cite the home in violation of its health and sanitation codes.

The city will move to clean the property in the next several weeks.

The decision allows the city to bill the owner or the estate, but Decatur officials say they have not found a next of kin and no heirs have come forward, thus far.

"We have been very concerned," Sandra Payne, a neighboring homeowner, told the City Commission.

"It's gone on for almost a year."

The city also will move to place the property in DeKalb County Probate Court, but that process could take months before reaching a resolution.
