Your Views: Ga Tax Breaks for the Braves?

What are your thoughts if the team asks the governor for stadium tax breaks?

The Atlanta Braves have already secured $300 million in public funding from Cobb County residents, but as it turns out, taxpayers across the state could be chipping in, too.

In a recent Atlanta Magazine report, it was disclosed that officials with the Braves and Cobb have considered funding resources up to $60 million in Georgia tax credits.

There are roughly a dozen tax incentives available on a variety of factors including job creation to businesses that relocate (even if it's just 14 miles up I-75) or expand within the state.

As the magazine goes on to illustrate, Braves’ officials are also considering another incentive, “created especially for new tourism destinations, that can be granted only by the governor. If the team were approved for the program, it could earn the Braves a 10-year rebate on all sales taxes it collected at the new stadium – perhaps $20 million.”

For now, it’s unknown exactly how much the baseball club might seek, but as this Bloomberg story on publicly financed stadiums across the country details, “the costs of hosting professional sports aggravated the collapse of revenue during the past two recessions and burdened cities and states.”

The question to ponder here in this season of giving - are you ready to give (even more of) your tax dollars to the Braves? And if required to do such, will you remember so when you head to the polls during the 2014 governor’s election?
