With Floyd Gone, Decatur Commission To Pick New Mayor

The Decatur City Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday and the first order of business is picking a new mayor from among the four commissioners: Jim Baskett, Fred Boykin, Kecia Cunningham and Patti Garrett.

The Decatur City Commission will pick a new mayor Monday night, and for the first time in 14 years Bill Floyd will not be in the running.

  • Jim Baskett, mayor pro tem since 2002 and a commission member since 1995.
  • Fred Boykin, a commission member since 2001.
  • Kecia Cunningham, a member since 1999.
  • Patti Garrett, first elected in 2009.

Floyd says he won't attend the Monday night meeting. It starts at 7:30 p.m. in city hall.

The commission is expected to vote later to hold a special election March 19 for Floyd's seat.

On Monday, the commission is also scheduled to vote on an alcoholic beverage license for Chai Pani, an Indian restaurant that will open in the old Watershed space; the reappointment of Bryan Down as city attorney; and the appointment of municipal court judges.
