Memorial Day Events Thursday, Monday

DeKalb County will hold a program at 11 a.m. Thursday. American Legion Post 66 in Avondale Estates will hold a flag burning ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday.

Two events will pay tribute to America's fallen soldiers.

At 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, the DeKalb County government will hold a Veterans Memorial Day Commemoration program at the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur.

The event is titledΒ ONE DeKalb: Honoring Our Fallen Heroes. The event is free and open to the public.

James Murrin will be the guest speaker. His military service includes time in the Massachusetts National Guard, Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. He has received numerous awards and decorations, including he Legion of Merit to the Military Intelligence Corps Knowlton Award.

At 11 a.m. on Monday, May 28, members of American Legion Post 66 at 30 Covington Road in Avondale Estates will hold a flag burning ceremony in the side parking lot.

Flag etiquette calls for old flags to be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner, according to the website www.usflag.org. American Legion posts often conduct flag burning ceremonies on patriotic holidays.
