GDOT to Use New Website, Social Media for Weather Updates

The Georgia Transportation Board will use a new website and Facebook and Twitter, as well as the old standards of radio and television, to give future updates on inclement weather and road conditions.

Residents in Georgia will now be able to get updates of inclement weather and road conditions from the Georgia Department of Transportation via Facebook, Twitter and a newly designed website.

A preview of the new inclement weather section of the department’s website was a highlight at the November meeting of the Georgia Transportation Board. The page went live Nov. 17 and can be viewed at www.dot.ga.gov/winterweather.

In addition to the new webpage, social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter will be used to distribute information in the event of severe weather. These communication tools will be manned by staff from GDOT for who might find it easier to follow weather alerts and updates through social media. Officials said these new outlets will be in addition to the traditional means of radio, television and newspapers.

“The new webpage is a great way to let the public immediately see updates on road conditions,” said GDOT chairman Rudy Bowen. “I am excited to see the Department expanding its reach to different markets by increasing the use of social media."
