Edwards Wants To Delay Decatur High, Renfroe Renovation Vote

The Decatur Schools superintendent is asking the school board to postpone the Tuesday night vote on a massive school renovation plan. The vote would be held May 14 following community input meetings.

The Decatur School Board is still meeting tonight, but Schools Superintendent Phyllis Edwards wants to delay a vote on a master plan that would require a bond referendum.

The school system sent this email to Patch this afternoon.

Dr. Edwards has requested that the Board of Education table tonight's original Action Item concerning Master Planning until the May 14th Board of Education meeting. Β Details for the previously planned community events will be announced after spring break, and will be held at Decatur High School and Renfroe Middle School in the weeks following spring break.

The master plan calls for a massive renovation of Decatur High and construction of a new Renfroe Middle School. The option favored by school administrators would require a $58 million bond referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Since news stories about the renovation appeared, many readers of Decatur/Avondale Estates Patch and other local news blogs have complained about the process the school board followed.
