Decatur School Board Raises Millage Rate by One Mill

Decision came after three public hearings.

The City Schools of Decatur board of education voted Tuesday night to increase the millage rate by one mill, increasing the tax from 19.90 mills to 20.900 mills.

The school system also anticipates the millage rate will have to be raised again in 2012, to 21.670.

With the new millage rate, Decatur residents living in a $200,000 home will see an annual school tax increase of $100, while a $250,000 home will experience an annual increase of $125 and a $300,000 home will pay an annual increase of $150 (those figures are based on homes that experience no decline in value since their last assessment).

The vote came after three public hearings were held on the proposed increase, the last one occurring just before the board’s regularly scheduled meeting.

The system’s $37,010,484 budget in 2011 is expected to increase to $41,782,453 in 2012, and to $43,060,688 in 2013. The biggest jump in expenses from 2011 to 2012 came in the form of salaries, as an additional $2.9 million is being appropriated. However, benefits have been rising steadily as well, from $8.2 million in 2011 to an estimated $10.3 million in 2013.
