Decatur School Board Discusses Annexation Wednesday

The board will hold a work session at 4:30 p.m. in the Westchester Center.

Big changes in the Decatur anexation discussion.

The Decatur School Board meets at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (time changed from 5:30 p.m.) to talk about how annexation would affect the schools.

But there's a very strong chance annexation would not add as many students as first expected.

The conversation took a big turn Monday night when City Manager Peggy Merriss recommended the city only annex two of six areas under consideration.

Those commercial-heavy areas only include a few hundred residents, meaning the impact on the city school system would not be as great as expected.

The school system issued a report last month saying annexation would put great stress on the what is already the fastest-growing system in the state.

The school board meets Dec. 11 and will vote on a resolution to give the city commission. The commission is scheduled to decide Dec. 17 what course to take.

The school board work session will be held in the Westchester Center on Scott Boulevard.

On Monday night, the city commission may or may not go along with the city manager's proposal.

I find it interesting that Decatur is (obviously) not self-sustaining. Makes me wonder if Brookhaven will be, or Peachtree Corners (in Gwinnett), or all these other sites that keep wanting to go out on their own. It's a fact that cities can go bankrupt a lot sooner than can counties. If Decatur is doing something this nasty for more cash, I imagine newer cities are in for a rude awakening.

"I find it interesting that Decatur is (obviously) not self-sustaining." Why do you say that? You need to look at Decatur's budget. They have a nice surplus fund and regularly get accolades for sound fiscal management. What they're trying to do is expand and diversify the tax base.
