Decatur Holding Two Sustainability Dialogue Sessions This Week

Residents should share their thoughts on historic buildings and the tree canopy.

Last month Lena Stevens, the Decatur resources conservation coordinator, discussed the draft of the city environmental sustainability plan with the city commission. She said the final version is a few months away.

To help fine-tune the plan, the city invites residents to attend two "dialogue sessions" this week. The Decatur Minute describes the events.

The first session is Tuesday, April 3, in the Harry and Linda Teasley Lecture Hall in the Bullock Science Center at Agnes Scott College. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. and a panel discussion at 6 p.m.

The subject is "Historic Preservation and Environmental Sustainability – Respecting the Past and Meeting the Needs of the Future."Β

The panel is made up of Susan Kidd, sustainability director at Agnes Scott; Mark McDonald, president of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation; and Leslie Sharp of Georgia Tech.

The second session is 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the Decatur Library on Sycamore Street. The subject is "Strategies for Protecting Decatur’s Tree Canopy."

Ed Macie, the city aborist, will talk about Decatur's current tree canopy and lead a discussion about ways to preserve and replenish it.

If you can't attend the sessions, you can leave comments on the draft of the sustainability plan.
