Decatur Commission Expected To Set Special Election

The election would be held March 19 to fill the District 1 commission seat vacated by Bill Floyd.

Β A new election is on the horizon in Decatur.

The city commission meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, and is expected to set a March 19 special election for the District 1 city commission post.

City Manager Peggy Merriss is recommending the qualifying period be Wednesday, Feb. 13, toΒ  Friday, Feb. 15, between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day.

The winner will fill the seat Bill Floyd held for 22 years. He resigned last month to take a consulting job. Floyd also served as mayor since 1995, being chosen by his peers on the commission.

The winner will serve through 2015. So far, Scott Drake is the only person to announce his intention to run.

In other business, five residents of Midway Road have asked to be annexed into the City of Decatur.

Residents can watch the meeting on live streaming video on their home computers by going to the city website.

The commission meetings will still be rebroadcast on Comcast channel 25 at 2 p.m. Saturday.
