Avondale Estates OKs 'Motorized Cart' Ordinance

Don't call them golf carts. These low-speed vehicles are now allowed on the streets of Avondale Estates, except for the main drag, Avondale Road/East College Avenue.

After nearly two years of discussion, the Avondale Estates City Commission has given a third and final reading to a motorized cart ordinance.

Residents with driver's licenses can now tool around town in these low-speed vehicles except for the busy main street known as U.S. 278, Avondale Road and East College Avenue.

The city is emphasizing that plain old golf carts, like you might find at the country club, are not allowed because they don't have required safety features such asΒ  front and rear lamps, a horn, a rearview mirror, hip restraints and hand holds.

The commission had discussed allowing carts since early 2011, leading Mayor Ed Rieker to comment, "The wheels grind slowly" when the ordinance came up for final reading Dec. 17, 2012.
