Avondale Estates Honors 9/11 Victims

City calls to mind the tragedy and loss of 2,973 lives with flags.

Thousands of motorists drive by this site every day, but in the past week many have stopped to observe the tribute Avondale Estates is paying those who lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Centers in New York.

Eleven years ago on September 11, 2001, 2,973 people were killed in the assault.

In their honor, the city created a temporary memorial by installing flags on the Dewey Brown Memorial Plaza to represent each person who died. The flags are arranged around the permanent 9/11 memorial the city dedicated in November 2001.

“One of the most important things that we can do is to REMEMBER that day, those who perished and the lessons that we have learned,”
said City Manager, Clai Brown in an e-mail.

The City will remember the day with a moment of silence and the lowering of the flags on the Plaza.
