UPDATED: Grandson Charged in Grandmother's Stabbing Death

Decatur police have charged a 23-year-old man in the stabbing death of his own grandmother. 

The 75-year-old victim, Shirley Kendrick, also suffered a head injury in the Oct. 29 incident at her Oakhurst home and died a short time later at an area hospital.

Her grandson, Marquis La’Vonta Freeman, is charged with murder, aggravated assault and battery, in the incident, which occurred just before midnight, police said.

The stabbing occurred at the home in the 200 block of Cambridge Avenue.

“Family members attempted to intervene in the assault and Mrs. Kendrick’s son suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and Mrs. Kendrick’s husband received minor injuries,” Decatur Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ross said.

Decatur fire personnel responded to the home in what they believed to be a medical-assistance-needed call.

But when they arrived, they suspected an assault occurred.
