For the second time this week, Decatur police report a rash of motor vehicle burglaries.

Police found seven cars that appeared to have been burglarized in the overnight hours of Jan. 16 into Jan. 17. on West Ponce de Leon Avenue at Ponce de Leon Court.

Though officers weren't able to locate all the owners, some of the vehicles were knowingly left unsecured and others may have been left unsecured unintentionally, police said. There were no signs of forced entry in any of the cases.

Items reported stolen include:
  • a duffle bag containing clothing
  • iPhone
  • loose change
The incident comes after a Jan. 14 incident in which police said 11 vehicles were vandalized in Decatur's Winnona Park neighborhood.

And it follows a Jan. 15 case in Avondale Estates incident that involved seven auto burglaries. Among the items stolen in that case was a gun.

Police are looking to see if all the cases are related, but they may not necessarily be so.

"It is a possibility based on operating in the same area, within the same week, targeting unsecured vehicles and scavenging literally any items they come across," Decatur Police Sgt. Jennifer S. Ross told Decatur-Avondale Estates Patch.

"However, we have worked similar crimes in a short time frame and ended up with multiple suspects who were operating independently in the same area and time frame in the past."
