Avondale Estates and DeKalb County police have charged a 20-year-old man with robbing two women in their 60s -- one of whom was hurt and taken to the hospital.
Julian Rashawn Clay of Mountain Drive, just outside the Avondale Estates city limits, is being held in the DeKalb Jail. He's charged with two counts of robbery, one count of aggravated assault and two counts of misdemeanor battery.
In the Avondale case, a 65-year-old Decatur woman said she had shopped at Rite Aid on Memorial Drive about 7 p.m. July 18 and crossed the road to walk to the Kensington Marta Station.
A man approached her on Covington Highway and asked for money. When she said no, the man thrust his hand into her handbag and grabbed her purse change and a Marta Breeze Card.
The second robbery occurred about 2:30 p.m. on July 31, not far from the first robbery but in the DeKalb police jurisdiction. The victim was a 66-year-old woman who lives in Avondale Estates.
Witnesses at the Shell Station on Memorial said they saw Clay throw the woman to the ground and assault her as he tried to take her purse. When the witnesses ran out to help the woman, Clay ran across the street to the Exxon Station. When Avondale police approached, he ran away again.
The woman was taken to the hospital by ambulance, but her condition was not known.
