UPDATED: Gun Among Stolen Items in Avondale Car Break-Ins

The incidents occurred in Kensington's 3100 block and the 800 block of Stratford.

Vandals broke into at least seven vehicles early Wednesday morning on Kensington and Stratford roads, stealing a handgun from one of them, Avondale Estates police said.

The incidents occurred in Kensington's 3100 block and the 800 block of Stratford.

They come one day after Decatur police reported 11 auto break-ins on Jan. 14 in that city's Winnona Park neighborhood.

One of the vehicles in the Avondale case was forcibly entered while thieves made off with a toolbox from the bed of a pickup truck, as well as change and GPS systems.

Police estimate the break-ins occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Jan. 15.

Police have no suspects and the case underscores what law enforcement agencies nationwide stress: Anything of value — or perceived value — is a tempting target to thieves looking for something to steal and sell. Drivers should take those items with them or put them out of view of. They also should lock their doors.

Anyone with information related to the incidents is asked to call Investigator Tom Gillis at 404.391.4526.
