Decatur Police Off Drop-Off Site for Unused, Expired Meds

Decatur Police will be collecting unused and unwanted prescription drugs in front of 250 E. Ponce de Leon Ave. on Saturday, April 26.

Drop off your unused or expired medications between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Organizers cite these facts from the website Take Back Your Meds as a need for the program.

• Many teens mistakenly think medicines in the home medicine cabinet are safer to abuse than illegal drugs. Safely disposing of unwanted and expired medicines using a take-back program keeps these medicines out of the hands of teens.  
• Unwanted medicines left in the home endanger children, seniors and pets. Poisonings from prescription and over-the-counter medicines are increasing.
• For years the advice was to flush drugs or mix them with kitty litter and throw them in the garbage. Flushing drugs sends them directly into our waters, harming the environment. Drugs thrown in the garbage are available for others to take and use and can still get into the environment. Returning medicines to a take-back program is the only environmentally sound method for dispose of unused medicines.
