Decatur Police Capture Suspected Car Thief

Two officers drew their weapons when the suspect fled on foot.

This information comes from a Decatur police report.

Two Decatur police officers drew their weapons July 9 in apprehending a suspected car thief at the Avondale Marta Station.

About 11:30 a.m. that day, officers began following a 2004 Chrysler Sebring reported stolen out of Atlanta.

The driver of the car drove down several downtown streets in trying to elude officers and bumped another car near Commerce and East Ponce.

The car that was struck spun around and the car being pursued continued East on East Ponce.

The Sebring turned onto Sycamore and the driver stopped, got out of the car and ran toward the Avondale Marta Station.

He changed direction when a Decatur officer pulled into the parking lot. A second officer arrived on the scene, pointed her pistol at the suspect and ordered him to lie on the ground.

D'Anthony Sharod Thomas of Deerwood Drive, Decatur, was arrested and placed in the DeKalb County Jail. He was charged with theft by receiving stolen property, fleeing and attempting to elude, hit and run and driving while unlicensed.
