They were distracted by a man who said he worked for the "city of DeKalb."

The following information comes from Decatur Police Department reports.

A couple told police somebody stole about $6,000 in jewelry from their house the afternoon of Nov. 22 while they talked in the back yard to a man who told them he was a local government employee.

The couple said they were planting flowers in front of their house in the 100 block of Ridley Circle when a black, four-door pickup truck with tinted windows pulled in front of their home.

A young man, described as thin, 5-foot-7 and Hispanic, got out of the truck and told them he was Tom Thompson and worked with the “City of DeKalb” development department.

He said he needed to show them some trees in their backyard that would be taken down during upcoming construction, and the couple accompanied him to the backyard. When they returned to the front yard, the man who lived in the house noticed that the truck seemed to be parked differently.

The victim reported the theft to police, described the suspects and said he would recognize them again if he saw them. A few hours later, an officer spotted and detained two young men who fit the description of the thieves.

Police put the theft victim into the back of a patrol car and slowly drove by the two young men.  The victim said he could not say with certainty that those two men were the robbers.

The theft victim described said one man who took his iPod was wearing a black jacket with various emblems on it and a dark colored toboggan.  He said the other male was wearing a red jacket and a dark colored toboggan.
