Crime Update: Recent Decatur Police Department Arrests

  1. On 08/16/13 at approximately 6:50 pm, Decatur officers responded to the area of West Trinity Place and West Ponce de Leon Avenue in reference to multiple callers reporting a male staggering in and out of traffic and harassing females.  Officers located the suspect who stated he was drunk and should have stayed home.  The suspect was in possession of suspected marijuana and a bottle of whiskey.  The male suspect, identified as 51-year-old Terry W. Smith of Atlanta, was arrested and charged with public intoxication, VGCSA possession of marijuana less than an ounce and open container.
  2. On 08/22/13 at approximately 2:32 pm, Decatur officers responded to an assault in the 200 block of East Ponce de Leon Avenue.  A witness reported seeing a male slap a female who was holding a baby and then leave in a vehicle while the female went into the Wells Fargo bank.  Officers were interviewing the witness and victim when the suspect came back to the scene on foot and was subsequently taken into custody for the assault.   As officers were working to find a way for the victim to get home, the suspect notified officers he had parked his vehicle in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex.  Investigators walked the victim to the car where she noticed her small dog laying in the floor board.  The dog was breathing but not responsive.  One of the vehicle’s windows was open approximately three inches, but the interior of the vehicle was extremely hot.  An investigator attempted to cool down and revive the dog and an officer transported the dog to a local animal hospital for treatment.  The male suspect, identified as 34-year-old Kibreab Tesfalidet of Clarkston, was arrested and charged with simple battery under the Georgia Family Violence Act, cruelty to children in the third degree and cruelty to animal.
  3. On 08/26/13 at approximately 3:50 pm, Decatur officers responded to the 100 block of Maple Street in reference to a wanted person.  The officer arrived and located a male matching the description provided.  Further investigation revealed there was an active warrant for the male for robbery out of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.  The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Calvin Drake Jr. of Atlanta, was arrested and held on the warrant.
  4. On 08/27/13 at approximately 12:12 pm, Decatur officers responded to an assault in progress in the 100 block of Springdale Street.  The caller stated a male and female were in a physical altercation and the female had locked herself in a vehicle and the male was attempting to force entry into the vehicle.  Officers arrived and met with the victim who reported her boyfriend was intoxicated and under the influence of prescription medication and when she attempted to leave his residence, he became angry and attempted to force her to stay.  The victim reported her boyfriend began breaking items inside of his home and grabbed her and threw her back inside of the residence when she tried to leave.  The victim was able to escape and lock herself inside of her vehicle.  The victim reported the suspect then slashed one of her tires and began punching the vehicle.  The male suspect, identified as 30-year-old Stephen Bennett of Decatur, was located and arrested a short distance from the scene and charged with false imprisonment, criminal damage to property in the 1st degree, VGCSA possession of marijuana less than ounce, criminal trespass and battery.
  5. On 08/30/13 Duwayne Dedeaux of DeKalb County, 29, was arrested on outstanding warrants for robbery and battery regarding a robbery and assault which occurred in the 500 block of East Ponce de Leon Avenue on 05/09/13.
  6. On 08/30/13 at approximately 3:30 pm, Decatur officers responded to the 400 block of Second Avenue in reference to a trouble unknown.  An officer arrived and made contact with a male who stated he was afraid of the construction crew working on an adjacent property.  The male began to yell at the crew and the officer was able to have the male return inside of his home and talk.  The male was upset the construction crew was present. The officer spoke to the construction crew supervisor who stated the male had been coming outside and yelling at the crew throughout the day.  The officer left the scene and was dispatched back to the location minutes later due to a report of damage to property.  The supervisor of the construction crew reported after the officer left, he heard the sound of breaking glass and observed the same male outside using a hammer to strike the windshield of one of the construction worker’s trucks.  The male had since returned back inside his home.  Officers located the suspect inside of his home and took him into custody without further incident.  The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Roger Allen of Decatur, was transported to an area hospital and treated for minor lacerations caused by broken glass and for a mental health evaluation.  Allen was later released on a citation for criminal damage to property in the 2nd degree and admitted to the hospital.
  7. On 09/03/13 at approximately 7:35 am, a Decatur officer was dispatched to the probation office in the 500 block of Church Street in reference to drug possession.  The officer met with one of the probation officers who reported a probationer reported to the facility for a work detail in possession of marijuana.  The probationer was found in possession of a vitamin bottle which contained 19 individually wrapped bags of suspected marijuana.  The male suspect, identified as 22-year-old Kaaron Powell of DeKalb County, was arrested and charged with VGCSA possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.
  8. On 09/05/13 at approximately 2:46 pm, Decatur officers responded to the 600 block of East College Avenue in reference to a theft by shoplifting.  The complainant stated two males entered the store, one carrying a sander.  The males loitered near the  chainsaw display and then one male got in line to pay for a disk for the sander.  The second male then exited the store carrying a chainsaw that he failed to pay for.  The male who purchased the sander disk claimed he did not know the male who just fled the store with the chainsaw, but he abruptly left the store.  The suspect who left the store with the chainsaw was located at the intersection of Katie Kerr Drive and South Columbia Drive carrying the stolen chainsaw.  The employee/witness identified the suspect as the male seen leaving the store with the chainsaw.  The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Nathaniel Wiggs of DeKalb County, was arrested and charged with shoplifting.
