Decatur police report that two juveniles were arrested overnight in connection with an armed carjacking in the 200 block of Sycamore Street in Decatur.

According to Sgt. Jennifer Ross, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, two people were sitting in a parked vehicle when they were approached by four black males, two of which were holding handguns.

One suspect placed a handgun to the temple of the driver and demanded money and the vehicle, whereupon the victim complied.

A second suspect, described as standing between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8 and wearing a red or orange cap, tan “Carhartt” style jacket and dark pants, demanded the passenger’s phone and struck her in the face with his fist. Ross reports that neither victim was injured.

The four suspects entered the vehicle and fled south on Church Street. A short time later, DPD officers responded to a vehicle accident in the yard of a house in the 900 block of South Candler Street and located the victim’s vehicle.

One witness reported seeing two black males run from the vehicle onto Driftwood Terrace and a second witness reported seeing two black males run from the vehicle south on South Candler Street.

With the assistance of a DeKalb PD K9 unit, Decatur officers located two of the suspects, one in the woods on Driftwood Terrace and one behind a home in the 200 block of Brower Street, and took them into custody.

Decatur needs to get a grip on the increasing crime. The hundreds of apartment units being built at present is only going to add to the potential for Decatur's stellar reputation as a safe, walkable community to be sullied. Need to be adding police presence - walking the beat in the "walkable" 4 sq. mile city!

Didn't the Georgia Legislature just make it legal to carry guns during carjackings? Oops, no, they are making it legal to use them (oops) I mean carry them in church and at school. At some point the gun used in every armed robbery was bought legally, wasn't it? Oops, we don't have restrictive gun background checks, either. Thanks, NRA.

At least Decatur catches the thugs! Atlanta police cannot even find them or catch them when they have them in sight ala last weekend. When three thugs were chased, they bailed from the car and the lackluster APD could not run fast enough or deploy backup to catch them, so even if you have more crime, they were caught. We just get zero results in Atlanta proper
