Take a Hike - or Bike - Around Stone Mountain

Get outside, enjoy the spring-like weather and hike or bike around the big piece of carved granite

Looking for something fun to do this weekend outside of Decatur or Avondale Estates? About 10 miles east is Stone Mountain Park, which is an easy drive or invigorating bike ride away.

Take a several mile hike around the vast carved granite rock, or go around several times on your bike. If you have time, hike up to the top of the mountain.

If you brought the kids, stop at the massive playground with jungle gyms galore, a sand box and plenty of space for kicking the soccer ball on the westside of the park.

Or just bring a picnic and stop at one of the many rest areas around the perimeter of the rock.

Walking east past the playground on a recent Sunday, there's a short trail by the lake for hiking.

Try the Cherokee Trail around the base of the mountain. It is a 6 mile trail with great views of the lake and the mountain. I usually go every weekend with the dogs. It isn't a very strenuous hike and will take most people around 2 hours to complete.
