In Memorium: Janet Koch Simpson, Retired Decatur Teacher

Simpson taught at Bob Mathis and Columbia Middle schools.

Janet Koch Simpson, a former teacher in Decatur Public Schools, died Friday, Jan. 17.

She was 66.

Born to Edward M. and Helen Serene Koch, in Hawaii, the Stone Mountain resident was a graduate of Indiana Area High School and then Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1968.

Ms. Simpson earned her master’s degree in middle school education from Georgia State University in 1991.

She was first a 5th grade teacher at Bob Mathis Elementary School in Decatur, GA, and later taught 6th grade Language Arts at Columbia Middle School in Decatur, GA, until her retirement in 2006. 

Surviving are two daughters, Heidi S. Evans and husband Jim, and Heather S. Daniel and husband Chad, all of Lilburn; a sister, Margaret K. Conners of Indiana, Penn.; four grandchildren: Caroline M. Daniel, Zac A. Daniel, Jake S. Evans, Ava E. Evans of Lilburn, and one nephew, Ian M. Conners of Indiana, Penn. 

She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Funeral services will be private.
