Nancy’s Reads & Reels: Meet the Authors—Tom Perrotta and Bobbi Kornblit

Meet an author and hear them read from their book. Check out local book stores and the Decatur Library.

I went to hear Tom Perrotta read from The Leftovers at the Decatur Book Festival. It made me want to read the book, which I bought and he signed.

I’m always interested in how an author comes up with ideas for a book because writing fiction seems daunting to me. I had read other book of Mr.Perrotta’s so that made me receptive to buying another of his books.

Recently I went to hear Bobbi Kornblit read from her novel, Shelter from the Texas Heat.  She was appearing at Tall Tales Book Shop in Toco Hills, so my daughter and I dropped by and listened to Bobbi read from her book — a tale of three generations of women.

We asked Bobbi questions about how long it took her to write the novel (two years) and about the process. Born and raised in Dallas and a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, she has the background for the setting of her novel. We each took home a copy and plan to read it soon.

The Decatur Book Festival and other book festivals are so popular but authors appear weekly in and around Decatur and it’s worth the effort to tear yourself away from the television once in a while to hear what they have to say.
