Opera Goes to Church in Avondale Estates

With many arts organizations taking their performances out into the community, Peach State Opera is joining The Atlanta Symphony, who recently performed in early October at the Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams library in DeKalb County, by bringing opera to audiences close to home. Their upcoming performance of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte will be presented and sung in English at Avondale First Baptist Church in Avondale Estates on Saturday, January 11 at 3 p.m. This vibrant church has embraced and supported many arts organizations by hosting their perfomances. Peach State is now in rehearsal for Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte which is considered by musicologist and critics to be his most perfect and flawless opera. Often billed as an amusing farce, it takes place in a single day and involves the Neapolitan sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, who are romantically involved with two soldiers Ferrando and Gugielmo. Their older and cynical friend Don Alfonso wagers them that the faithfulness of their lovers , as with all women, is questionable. He hatches a plot with the men and the sisters’s maid Despina to disquise the soldiers as Albanians and trick the two women into falling in love with the exotic visitors. This turn of events would ensure that he wins the bet. As to be expected, mayhem ensues and this comic farce is tempered with some of the most beautiful ensemble singing in all of opera. With this in mind, artistic director Evelyn Hughes has gathered an outstanding cast from all over the country. Some are returning from previous productions, but all have in common beautiful voices that blend well.
