Video and Photos: Youth Honor Veterans

Students placed flags in the Decatur City Cemetery on Saturday in preparation for Veterans Day.

Scores of students showed up at the Decatur City Cemetery on Saturday morning to place flags on graves in advance of Veterans Day.

Hugh Simpson shot video of the occasion, which he shared with Patch. Chris Billingsley, a Decatur High teacher and sponsor of the Close Up Club, said club members and Boy and Girl Scouts were among those distributing the flags.

Billingsley sent Patch some photos and described what happened.

The students enjoyed discovering the graves of Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Confederate veterans and Georgia temperance and suffrage leader Mary Latimer McLendon.

Several of the students use service projects like this one to help raise money for their 2012 Close Up trip to Washington, D.C. in April.

Thanks to Cathy Vogel for organizing the event.

Decatur's Veteran Day ceremony, as well as the dedication of the new cemetery flagpole, will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011. The ceremony will include a moment of remembrance for those who fought in the "Great War" and all U.S. veterans.
