George Lawrence II Does DSA Proud on TV

George Lawrence II, who graduated from DeKalb School of the Arts in 2011, is now looking for a win on So You Think You Can Dance.

There is a local Decatur-Avondale Estates connection on Fox's popular dance competition show "So You Think You Can Dance" and, if his audition video is any indication, yes he certainly can.

George Lawrence II, who graduated from last year, was recently featured on the show's traveling audition round when host Cat Deeley and all the judges stopped by the Fox Theatre to assess the talents of Atlanta dancers.

Lawrence said that he grew up with a dad who really wanted to cheer for him. So, he played many different sports, but found the most success in running track. In fact, at one point, he said he was ranked 11th in the nation. When Lawrence left track to focus on dance, his father wasn't so supportive, but he said he just has to concentrate on doing well despite his dad's disapproval.

He's shown doing some athletic dance moves, including balancing on the edge of a fountain at Centennial Olympic Park, and tells viewers that a successful audition here would securely place his dad back on his side.

Then comes his routine, which can be seen at right. His dancing is smooth, fluid and incredibly flexible--check out his handstand!

Judge Nigel Lythgoe praises him and offers some fatherly approval, fellow judge Mary Murphy declares his routine the best she's seen in Atlanta and guest judge Debbie Allen proclaims that he was born to dance.

Better yet? He's on his way to Las Vegas for the next stage of the competition.

Tune in Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. on Fox to keep an eye on Lawrence's progress.
