11/11/11: Veterans Day Activities

Ceremonies will be held at the Decatur City Cemetery and St. Thomas More Catholic School.

Several Veterans Day activities are planned for Friday, Nov. 11, in Decatur and Avondale Estates.

Veterans Day is a national holiday honoring military veterans. Most of the events occur at 11 a.m. because the armistice that ended World War I was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

  • A new flagpole will be dedicated at 11 a.m. at the , where many veterans are buried. American Legion Harold Byrd Post 66 is among the veterans groups participating. Last weekend, students placed flags on gravesites.
  • More than 40 veterans will be honored at ’s Veterans Day celebration. Beginning with an assembly at 1:30 p.m. in the school’s gym, students will escort visiting veterans into the afternoon program. Monsignor Paul Fogarty will open with a prayer and the school band, chorus and hand bell ensemble will perform. Cub Scout Troop 551 will post the nation's colors and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The guest speaker is Father Kevin Peek, an Atlanta priest who recently returned from an 18-month tour in Afghanistan.
