Does this reflect your experience with chickens?

My grandmother kept chickens. I fell in love with them and wanted to make pets of them--tried to get them to eat out of my hand. BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE! They got MAD! And they pecked me--all over! (I wasn't a lot higher off the ground than they were). Granny told me that if I threw the grain out on the ground as far as possible, scattering it widely, they would be so busy pecking it up off the ground they would let me alone. that worked. The hens would peck at me when I tried to take their eggs out from under them. Granny said it was because I acted nervous and it made them nervous too. She just stuck a quick hand under them and the eggs were gone before the hens' bird-brains "knew" she'd been there. Their rooster crowed at dawn---and all day--and several times a night, too. City kid here thought that was odd. Nope, granny said he crows not because the sun is coming up but because he is awake and there are hens around to impress about what a sexy guy he is! And to warn the other roosters to stay away. Since there were lots of folks in the neighborhoods with chickens--and roosters-- the stud-of-the-yard stayed very busy "protecting his interests". There would be an occasional fertilized egg among the breakfast eggs, which granny discarded, as it tasted different and people seem to object to embryonic chicks turning up in their scrambled eggs.

Here's a dumb city-slicker question: How do you know whether an egg is fertilized from outside of the shell?

You can tell by spots on the outside of the shell. As if Bill Clinton had been by.
