How Much Do Decatur, Avondale Estates Give To Charity?

The Chronicle of Philanthropy found that people in the 30030 and 30002 zip codes donated almost $21 million to charity in 2008.


A wide-reaching new study from the Chronicle of Philanthropy that examined the amount of charitable giving in every zip code in the country found that people in the 30030 and 30002 zip codes are very charitable.

All the figures came from 2008.

In Decatur's main zip code, 30030, $17.1 million was donated to charity with a median contribution of $2,638. Out of a median discretionary income of about $63,085, that's about 4.2 percent total donated to charity.

In Avondale Estate's main zip code, 30002, $3.8 million was donated to charity with a median contribution of $3,011. Out of a median discretionary income of about $55,333, that's about 5.4 percent total donated to charity.

  • In 30030, households making between $50,000 and $99,999 gave 6.2 percent of their income at an average contribution of $1,882. In 30002, households in that income bracket gave 8.4 percent of their income at an average contribution of $2,374.
  • In 30030, households making between $100,000 and $199,999 gave 4.0 percent of their income at an average contribution of $3,271. In 30002, households in that income bracket gave 4.1 percent of their income at an average contribution of $3,186.
  • In 30030, households making $200,000 and up gave 3.4 percent of their income at an average contribution of $7,160. In 30002, households in that income bracket gave 3.7 percent of their income at an average contribution of $7,461.

The 30030 zip code has a charitable giving rank of 2,034 out of 28,724 zip codes. The 30002 zip code has a charitable giving rank of 8,179.

The Chronicle's study, which uses data from 2008, found some other interesting patterns around the United States. Red states tended to have more charitable giving than blue states, the Southeast gave the most of all four regions studied and Georgia ranked eighth overall in giving.
