Decatur Woman Receives Award for Volunteer Service

The chairman of the board at International Community School in Decatur volunteers 40 hours per week on top of a full-time job.

Angela Hale, of Avondale Estates, recently received a Point of Light Award for her volunteer services.

Points of Light, the world’s leading volunteer organization, encourages people to make a difference by taking action and volunteering.

The Daily Point of Light Award celebrates an individual who “embraces the challenge of tackling a community need through volunteer service.”

On top of a full-time job at The Carter Center, Hale volunteers about 40 hours a week at the International Community School in Decatur, a K-5 DeKalb County charter elementary school that serves refugee children from 40 countries.

She began volunteering at ICS in 2009, helping with painting and computer projects and eventually began to tutor. In 2012, Hale joined the board and has served as chairman since 2013.

Hale also placed her son, David, and daughter, Elena, in ICS, according to Points of Light.

“The place was magnetic, like family,” Hale says, according to Points of Light. “The school is based on ideals, and the ideals are put into practice every day.”

“I don’t want to emphasize my individual work too much,” Hale told the organization. “I think my greatest accomplishment has been to assemble an amazing board of directors. I feel I’m living a charmed life because I’m surrounded by so many people I love and respect. . . . I’m part of a community effort, and we all believe in the cause.”
