"Cannery Row" miniature book-in-a-can opening

Emory University’s library will host this unusual book art event – the opening of a shrimp can that contains a miniature illustrated excerpt of John Steinbeck’s “Cannery Row.” The circular book-in-a-can, part of the Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library’s collections at Emory, was created by book artists Peter and Donna Thomas, who will be on hand to open the can at the event. Light refreshments will be served at the opening.

The 16-page, accordion-style circular booklet contains the opening paragraph of “Cannery Row,” with eight watercolor pictures painted by Donna Thomas. The Thomases will also display their “Gypsy Wagon Artist’s Bookmobile” outside the library, which event attendees can visit.
