Elections 2014: 2 DeKalb Polling Places Moved for July 22 Runoffs

Political pundits expect turnout to be low Tuesday for runoff elections across Georgia. Polls open at 7 a.m.

The steamy weather has prompted election officials to change two DeKalb County polling places for Tuesday’s runoff elections because the original sites lack air conditioning.

According to WABE, the two changed voting sites are:

  • Lithonia: Redan-Trotti Library changes to Redan Elementary School, 1914 Stone-Mountain Lithonia Road.
  • Decatur: Wesley Chapel Library changes to Rainbow Elementary School, 2801 Kelley Chapel Road.

Political pundits expect turnout to be low Tuesday for runoff elections across the state, particularly the race for state schools superintendent.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. across the state Tuesday.

One of the most high-profile races on the ballot will decide the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, which pits Jack Kingston against David Perdue.

There are just over 5 million registered voters in Georgia. But poll watchers tell WABE they expect only the most committed of Georgia’s 5 million registered voters to take part in Tuesday’s runoffs.

Some local officials predict voter turnout will be around 10 percent for the election. The Republican Senate matchup may draw some out to the polls. But Emory political science professor Andra Gillespie says the state superintendent race won’t draw voters, possibly because they don’t really know what the job involves.

Gillespie says a compelling educational issue or heavy campaigning by the four candidates could boost interest. The contenders are: Democrats Alisha T. Morgan and Valarie Wilson, and Republicans Mike Buck and Richard L. ("Billy") Woods.

Georgia requires voters to show photo identification when they vote in person, says the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Valid IDs include a Georgia driver’s license, even if it’s expired; a state-issued voter identification card; a valid U.S. passport; and a valid U.S. military photo ID.
