Decatur Lawyer to Run for Carter's GA Senate Seat

Kyle Williams is running to represent District 42 that covers Decatur and portions of DeKalb County including neighborhoods from Buford Highway to DeKalb Avenue.

Less than a month after State Sen. Jason Carter announced he would enter the 2014 race for governor, a Decatur resident has made known his intentions to seek the District 42 seat that Carter is vacating.

Lawyer Kyle Williams, who made an unsuccessful bid for the Decatur City Commission Post 2 seat in 2009, is running to represent the district that covers Decatur, Avondale Estates and portions of DeKalb County including neighborhoods from Buford Highway to DeKalb Avenue such as North Druid Hills, Morningside, Druid Hills, East Lake, Kirkwood and Edgewood.

A Democrat, the openly gay Williams is asking supporters to ‘like’ his Facebook page announcing his bid for the state Senate seat.

Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, will attempt to unseat Gov. Nathan Deal, the Republican incumbent who defeated Roy Barnes in 2010. Deal already faces primary opposition within his party from state Schools Superintendent John Barge and Dalton Mayor David Pennington.

Carter, 38, won a special election in May 2010 for the District 42 seat. He replaced former Sen. David Adelman, who was appointed ambassador to Singapore.

Carter won the general election later that year to secure a two-year term.
