What Should Go Here? Decatur First Bank

The building on Commerce Drive has been vacant since last fall.

This building on Commerce Drive used to be the headquarters for Decatur First Bank.

Decatur First folded last October and took over. Fidelity Bank assumed the deposits and occupied the building for a brief period, then vacated because that bank already has plenty of space.

Do you have ideas about what could be done with the old Decatur First Bank space? It doesn't have to be a bank building, you know.

About this column: Every week or so, we'll post a picture of a vacant store or lot in Decatur and Avondale Estates. You can tell us what you think should replace the empty space. Know of an empty building we should highlight? E-mail ralph.ellis@patch.com.

Let's see ... why should any business want to locate near Decatur? Some group of people (not all from Decatur or even Georgia) may decide they don't want the business, may form an "anti-that-business" interest group, co-op a State Representative and Mayor to praise their efforts, print a bunch of "anti-that-business" signs and then tear apart the fabric of the community. Let's just get another non-profit to occupy the space and add no revenue to the tax base. Or....maybe a store like Whole Foods, for lack of any substantive good growth alternatives?

There are 3 ACE (Toco, DeKalb Ave, Scott) hardware stores and a Home Depot (Lawrenceville/N Druid Hills) not Quite walking distance for most cvity of Decatur residents -- perhpas they would patronize a small hardware store. It seems to be an elegant building - Emory, DeKalb Medical Center, Health Department need small space for providers to have primary care providers - Emory and DeKalb already have locations in city so may not need more. Space for GA based farmers to sell local produce (Duane's -aka Decaturs Farmers Market - every day of week rather than Wednesday and Saturday @ Bank of America parking space and McDunough Street park: also invite others)--- Might not be sustainable year-round. All good suggestions br. It's so sad to see all of these vacant buildings in the Decatur area. There are a few hopeful constructions going on. A renovation on W. College AVE, a new building on College Ave going toward Avondale. A new building on McDonough. It's a shame the new constructions couldn't have reused some of the vacant buildings. When Selig starts construction on the Walmart (barf) I'm afraid the number of vacant buildings will skyrocket. So depressing.

How about a brewpub? You could see the shiny vats and equipment through the windows , vault for storage, already some parking... Decatur certainly can handle more BEER!
