Weekender: Family Fun At Woodlands Garden

Here are five things to do this weekend in and around Decatur and Avondale Estates.

Welcome to Woodlands Garden.  On Sunday afternoon, Woodlands Garden invites the community to explore the seven acres of trees and flowers at 932 Scott Blvd.  There will be a storyteller, a children’s parade and an introduction to new garden executive director Clarie Waggenspack Hayes. Starts at 2 p.m., with the program starting at 3:15 p.m. Parking is limited, so visitors are encouraged to park at Westchester School and walk or bike to the garden. Free.

Local boxer signs book.  Xavier “Fastpads” Biggs, who has coached and appeared on NBC’s “The Voice,” has written a book, “Sweet Sucker Punch,”  a collection of life lessons. The Decatur Minute says Biggs will hold a signing party Saturday at the Decatur Boxing Club at 137 New St. Admission is $15 and includes a boxing demo and barbecue. Peach Jam 2013. The first event in this celebration was a big hit at the Decatur Farmers Market on Wednesday. Peach Jam is a party built around Georgia’s signature fruit, the Peach, with special foods and drinks. Admission is free Saturday at the East Lake Farmers Market and Sunday at the Grant Park Farmers Market. For more info, go to the Community Farmers Markets webpage.

Inaugural Old Fourth Ward Park Arts Festival. Two hundred vendors will sell  paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and woodwork Saturday and Sunday at the park at 592 N Angier Ave NE. Free admission.

New movies. These are some of the films are hitting Atlanta area theatres this weekend: The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, White House Down with Jamie Foxx, Redemption with Jason Stratham, Monsters University and World War Z with Brad Pitt.
