Weekend Planner: Start With Big Tex Cantina's Spring Block Party

When you're not celebrating Saint Paddy's Day, you can watch a fund-raising basketball game, enjoy a women's improv group, celebrate the student-athlete and listen to Roxie Watson at Eddie's Attic.

Saint Patrick's Days dominates the weekend with special events at at Parker's on Ponce,Β  the Marlay House, Mac McGee, and Steinbeck's, among other places. Here are five other ideas for weekend fun in Decatur and Avondale Estates. For a full list of possibilities, look at the Patch calendar of events.

1. Spring Block Party. Big Tex Cantina kicks off the season with a big party featuring a crawfish boil, beer specials and live music by the Sam Holt Band, Deep Blue Sun, Eric Dodd and Bloodkin. Starts at 11 a.m. Saturday. No cover.

2. Jawbones vs. Sawbones. Decatur's lawyers and doctors battle on the basketball court in this fund-raiser for Side by Side Brain Injury Clubhouse. Starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Decatur High gym. $10 admission.

3. Collective 51. This all-women's improv troupe performs at the Academy Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday. It's rated PG-15. $12.

4. Celebrating the student-athlete. Over and Beyond Basketball LLC will host this second annual event at 4 p.m. Saturday at 481 Electric Ave., Decatur.

5. Roxie Watson. This string band performs β€œalterna-grass at 7 p.m. Saturday at Eddie's Attic. $15.
