Weekend Planner: Bike Derby, Urban Coop Tour and 'Annie' Are Among the Highlights

There's plenty to do this weekend in Decatur and Avondale Estates. Don't just sit around -- get out and do something!

1. Annie. St. Thomas More Catholic School will present this musical at 8 p.m. Oct. 5 and 6 and 2 p.m. Oct. 7. The school is at 636 W Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur. Tickets are $12.

2. Birding Club of Avondale Estates. Birders meet at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Avondale Community Club at 59 Lakeshore Drive. Free.

3. Avondale Estates Annual Autumn Attic Sale. This super-sized yard sale starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church, 3260 Covington Highway. Free admission.

4. Decatur Bike Derby. This family-friendly event is for cyclists of all ages. It starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at the 4/5 Academy at 101 Fifth Ave., Decatur. Free.

5. Michelle Malone. The singer-songwriter with a large local following will perform songs from her new album at Eddie's Attic. Shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $20 in advance.Β

6. Urban Coop Tour 2012. See some of the fanciest chicken houses around. Starts at noon Saturday and Sunday at 435 Oakview Road, Decatur. Tickets are $25 the day of the tour but cheaper online and in advance.

7. Writer Jasper Fforde. He'll read and talk about his new book, The Woman Who Died a Lot: A Thursday Next Novel, at 7 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Decatur. Free.

8. Big consignment sale. Looking for baby clothes? Check out Rhea Lana's of Decatur/Druid Hills Saturday through Wednesday at North DeKalb Mall at 2050 Lawrenceville Highway, Decatur. Hours are 6-9 p.m. Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday and varying hours the rest of the week. Free admission.

9. Step into Africa. Three Decatur churches are cooperating to present this interactive display about the AIDS plague in Africa, as seen through the eyes of a child. It starts at 11 a.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Decatur, 308 Clairemont Ave. but will continue through next week. Free admission.

10. Music in the Gardens. Jonathan McBee performs music from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Woodlands Garden at 932 Scott Blvd. Free.

11. H.P. Lovecraft in Avondale Estates. The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company will present a different adaptation of a Lovecraft story each weekend in October at the Academy Theatre. It's "Rats in the Walls" at 8 p.m. this Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, or $50 for access to one performance each weekend.
