Viewfinder: The First Peachtree Road Race

Only about 100 runners participated

The first Peachtree Road Race started at Georgia State University in 1970 with about 100 participants, many of whom were students.

Dean Tim Singleton (with the bullhorn) started the first race. He had it on July 4th because there was little traffic in Atlanta on that day. Several years later, the Atlanta Track Club sponsored the event.

Thanks for Avondale Estates resident Denise Forrester for sending us this photo from the GSU archives. She told Decatur Patch that she started running the Peachtree in 1990 and ran it for more than 10 years. And her sister and children still participate.
