Today: It's Decatur's Day of Reading

Here are 5 Things you need to know about this date--Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012.

1. Decatur's Day of Reading. Mayor Bill Floyd has issued a proclamation naming Thursday, Oct. 25, the city's 2012 day of reading. Everybody is encouraged to spend 30 minutes with a book or magazine to celebrate.

2. Decatur High pep rally. Expect a lot of noise from the high school. This is homecoming week and the school will hold a pep rally at 9 a.m. Thursday.

3. Weather. Sunny with a high around 80 and lows in the mid-50s.

4. Public meetings. The Avondale Estates Western Gateway meeting at 6:30 p.m. in city hall.

5. On this date. In 1994, Susan Smith of Union, S.C., claimed that a black carjacker had driven off with her two sons. She later confessed to drowning the children and was convicted of murder. (Source: New York Times)
