'This Old House' Names Avondale Estates One of The South's Best Neighborhoods

Website praises the architecture of the town.

This Old House, the magazine and website dedicated to the renovation of aging residences, held a fair last month in Decatur.

But the Old House website went down the road to Avondale Estates to find one of the Best Old House Neighborhoods in the South for 2012.

The website has high praise for the look and feel for Avondale Estates, saying,

The English Tudor style predominates among the assortment of English Cottage, Dutch Colonial, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman homes. Most are from the 1920s, though there are several ranch-style houses that were built beginning in the 1950s.

Look for thoughtfully crafted details including elaborate brick or stone work, decorative brackets, or red tile roofs. Fixer-uppers start at $120,000, while thoughtfully updated larger houses run from $200,000 to $500,000 to a high of $700,000.

Another winning point was location. Avondale Estates "is just a few minutes from downtown Atlanta, by car and two rapid-transit stations." (The judges must be fast drivers.)

Some of the other Southern towns on the list included Milton, N.C.; Francisville, La.; Park Circle in North Charleston, S.C.; and the Town Center Historic District in Yazoo, Miss.
