The Week Ahead in Decatur and Avondale Estates

You can go green on St. Patrick's Day, participate in a walkability study, learn about gardening and celebrate the student-athlete.

Here are things to know about this week in Decatur and Avondale Estates. For a full list of happenings, go to the Patch calendar of events.

1. Saint Paddy's Day. The official holiday is Sunday, but the fun starts earlier at some spots. In Decatur, you can get your green on at the Marlay House, Mac McGee and Steinbeck's, among other places.

2. Let's take a walk. A bunch of Avondale Estates residents will be hoofing around town Monday morning as part of the city's walkability study.

3. Common sense connections in the garden. Garden designer Brandy Hall will explain how to build prosperous and resilient  gardens. 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Decatur Public Library at 215 Sycamore St. Free.

4. Celebrating the student-athlete. Over and Beyond Basketball LLC will host the second annual event at 4 p.m. Saturday at 481 Electric Ave., Decatur.

5. Public meetings. Avondale Estates Development Authority, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at city hall. Decatur School Board, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Westchester Building. Decatur Active Living Board and Planning Commission, both at 7 p.m. Tuesday at city hall.  Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board Meeting, 8 a.m. Friday at city hall. Free.
