Storm Downs Trees, Knocks Out Power In Parts Of Decatur

The Decatur police said trees and wires had been downed on Winnona, Huron and Pinehurst. Power outages were reported around town but Georgia Power was on the scene.

A fast-moving storm swept through Decatur and Avondale Estates early Thursday night, downing trees and knocking out power.

Decatur police said about 9 p.m. Thursday night they'd received reports of downed trees, limbs and power lines on Winnona Drive, Huron Street and Pinehurst Street.

Power outages were reported in some sections of town but Georgia Power crews were making repairs Thursday night.

The storm struck with alarming speed but moved on quickly. Decaturites and Avondale Estates residents went on Twitter to report problems at their residences, such as low water pressure and discolored water.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted a Georgia Power spokesperson saying 162,000 Georgia Power customers were without electricity statewide and that about 30,000 members of electric membership corporations lost power.

Fox 5 reported that 100,000 lost power and that numerous trees were downed between Dunwoody and Chamblee.

A Twitter user said that in Dunwoody power signals rwere knocked out at Tilly Mill and Mount Vernon roads, causing a traffic mess around 9 p.m. Another Twitter user said all of Brookhaven lost power.

WSB.com reported that a severe thunderstorm watch has been for metro Atlanta until 1 a.m. Friday. There was a moderate threat of hail, the television station reported.

Friday's weather forecast calls for sunny skies with high temperatures in the mid-80s.
