Pets and Peeps: Ginger Spicegirl

The people: Mary and Victor Mahoney of Decatur.

Pet's name, nicknames, breed, and age: Ginger Spicegirl. Ginger, Gin Gin the Engine, and GG. Domestic shorthair calico. 13 years old.

How I met my pet: We adopted Ginger as an 8-week-old kitten from the Atlanta Humane Society. She is our first non-black cat.  When we went to the shelter, she pushed her tiny body up to the front of her cage, and shouted, “Take ME!”

I love it when my pet: Sleeps on my pillow, under my chin, or sandwiches herself between my husband and me.

What my pet eats: Science Diet Maintenance Diet (to maintain her girlish figure) and Tooth Diet (for healthy teeth and gums). Salmon-flavored Temptations for treats.

I wish my pet would stop: Trying to snatch butter.

What people say about my pet: “Awwww……Isn’t she cute!”

Most exciting moment with my pet: As soon as we turn out the lights, before Ginger joins us on the bed, she howls and yowls, while she “hunts down” her toy catnip mice.

How my pet has enriched my life: She loves us unconditionally and can sense when we need her the most.  She was a wonderful “pet therapist” when my husband had a heart attack.  She stayed by his side and purred him back to good health.  She brings us joy every day.

If my pet could talk, she would say: “Cats make the world go round!”
