Back in May, Patch asked readers for ideas about an abandoned gas station in the "What Should Go Here?" feature.
It turns out somebody really decided what should happen to the property next to the Friends School of Atlanta on Columbia Drive.
The nonprofit East Decatur Greenway purchased the old station and will demolish it and turn about two acres into green space, according to the Champion Newspaper.
Of course, the Environmental Protection Agency will have to remove underground gas storage tanks and conduct soil samples before the land can be used.
The green space will be available for the nearby Waldorf School, the United Methodist Children's Home and kids in the neighborhood.
About this column: Every week or so, we'll post a picture of a vacant store or lot in Decatur and Avondale Estates. You can tell us what you think should replace the empty space. Know of an empty building we should highlight? E-mail email@example.com.
