'Bring One For The Chipper' Program Collected 161,319 Trees Last Year

This will be a big weekend to get rid of the Christmas tree.

Keep Georgia Beautiful says the Christmas tree recycling program, "Bring One for the Chipper," has been a big hit over the last 20 years.

In a recent memo, Keep Georgia Beautiful provided these facts about collections in 2011:

  • 161,319 trees were collected in total. Of these, 155,891 were recycled into mulch for playgrounds, city and county landscaping projects, and individual homes.
  • 5,088 trees were sunk into lakes across the state to provide fish habitats. 397 were used for fuel or other uses. 
  • 5.7 million Christmas trees have been recycled and diverted from landfills since the start of the program.
  • 99 local governments and/or organizations participated.
  • 309 collection sites were set up throughout the state.

So do your part and recycle your tree. Here’s where and when to recycle in Decatur, Avondale Estates and DeKalb County.

Decatur

Where: The Agnes Scott College Parking lot. The entrance to the parking lot is between 184 and 206 S. Candler St.

When: Through Sunday, Jan. 8.

Note: Please do not leave your Christmas trees anywhere else on the ASC campus.

Avondale Estates

In Avondale Estates, a town tree recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Lake Avondale near Wiltshire and Berkeley. If you're going, look for the signs. For information, call 404-294-5400.

DeKalb County

DeKalb County residents receiving sanitation services can place their tree at the curb for pick-up on regular yard debris collection day. Trees should not exceed four feet in length for pick-up.

Christmas tree recycling drop-off locations are:

Seminole Road Landfill, 4203 Clevemont Road, Ellenwood, on Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Home Depot, 2295 Lawrenceville Highway Decatur.

Home Depot, 4343 Tilly Mill Road, Atlanta.

Home Depot, 4325 New Snapfinger Woods Drive, Decatur.
