House Hunt: Grace Notes

Each week we showcase area homes for sale that are worth looking at -- or strolling through.

Rounded archways, as I have written here before, are among the home details that always catch my eye. One of this week's homes possesses just such an arch, in addition to something I had not previously written about: a spiral staircase.

At 256 Lamont Drive, a pleasingly rounded arch separates the living room and the dining room. The latter space has a bay window and an elegant dome light that provide generous illumination. Completed in 1938, No. 256 has five bedrooms and three bathrooms. It has hardwood flooring throughout the main level and carpeting in the bedrooms upstairs. In the kitchen is a two-tiered granite counter that incorporates a stovetop and seating -- ideal for serving foods truly right off the griddle.

That spiral staircase, by the way, winds its way between a small, elevated deck and a larger, ground-level brick patio. These two things are on one side of the house. Behind it are a sizable concrete slab (with basketball goals and access to an integral, two-car garage) and a yet-larger expanse of tree-framed grass.

Although my own home has no iron gate like the one alongside 108 Mimosa Place, I have pondered whether to add one to my property, as well as how I might best position one. No. 108's gate divides the home's driveway from the back yard. Out back are a patio and a covered area/carport that includes a heated, enclosed workshop (that could be used as a home office) whose roof conceals extensive storage space.

Completed in 1947, No. 108 has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Unusually, the home's front porch is tiled. Just inside from there is a living room with a fireplace, a ceiling fan, and integral shelving. Many of this painted brick home's windows are fitted with plantation shutters. The windows themselves are a mix of double-paned and triple-paned fixtures.
