Weekend Planner: African Spiderman, Chicks in the City, Wine Crawl, Francine Reed, Rabbit Tales

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here are some ideas.

 When/where: 9:30 and 11 a.m. Thursday and Friday, Feb. 23 and 24, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25,  in the Winter Theatre at the Dana Fine Arts Building at Agnes Scott College, 141 E College Ave., Decatur.

Why go: The Blackfriars of Agnes Scott College present an adaptation of the most popular of African folk tales. The wily trickster Ananse the Spiderman weaves a web of adventures in the jungle and the sky. Fantastic fables are highlighted with singing, dancing, drumming and storytelling.

Chicks in the City Symposium

When/where: Starts at 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Oakhurst Church, 630 E. Lake Drive, Decatur.

Why go: Decatur is THE place to learn about backyard chickens. Poultry expert and radio host "The Chicken Whisperer" will kick off the event with information about local laws. You'll also learn about athe Symbiotic Nature of Chickens, Breeds of Chickens and Where to Find Them, Basics of Coop Construction and What to Feed your Chicken.

Price: $50 for members of Oakhurst Community Garden Project, $65 for non-members. You can buy tickets online.

Oakhurst Wine Crawl

When/where: 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at East Lake Drive and Oakview Road, Decatur.

Why go: You can visit 25 or more businesses serving three or four different types of wine. You don't have to drive because the free Fur Bus runs every 15 minutes from Harmony Park to the Wahoo and other businesses on College Street.

Junior Idol Competition

When/where: 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the food court of North DeKalb Mall, 2050 Lawrenceville Highway, Decatur.

Why go: See kids 8 to 15 display their talents. You can vote at northdekalbmall.com/idol.

Price: Free.

Francine Reed at Eddie's Attic

When/where: Sunday, Feb. 26, 6 and 9 p.m. at Eddie's Attic.

The event: Local blueswoman Francine Reed lays it down in two shows for Black History Month.

Price: Advance general admission tickets, $20. At the door, $23. Reserved table for four, $100.  Information, www.eddiesattic.com. You can buy tickets online at Ticket Alternative. 

Rabbit Tales at Decatur High

When/where: 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Decatur High Performing Arts Center, 310 N. McDonough St., Decatur.

Why go: The Atlanta Opera brings Rabbit Tales, a world premiere Atlanta Opera commission, to Decatur High School.  Based on the Br’er Rabbit stories by Joel Chandler Harris, this production is a contemporary, light-hearted opera that combines several story lines from Native American, African and Cajun Folklore.
